Loneliness. Sometimes Getting Out of Your Comfort Zone Will Beautify Your Life in Ways You Can’t Imagine
Loneliness is one of the hardest emotions to deal with—it ranks just behind grief, which itself can feel like a form of loneliness. If left unchecked, loneliness can even impact your physical health. But there’s hope! Here are five little-known ways to overcome loneliness and bring joy back into your life.
Loneliness and The Power of Connection
I know how overwhelming loneliness can feel. I used to cry from feeling so alone, convinced that everyone else had plenty of friends while I struggled to connect. But here’s the truth: many people are in the same boat, hesitant to reach out or step outside their comfort zones.
When I first moved to a big city, I barely knew anyone. I rented a tiny one-bedroom apartment and felt isolated. Eventually, I mustered the courage to attend a meet-and-greet event at my apartment complex. It wasn’t easy to walk into that room full of strangers, but I’m so glad I did. Even though I didn’t meet a ton of people that night, it was a step in the right direction.
Getting out, even when it feels uncomfortable, is a key step toward breaking free from isolation. For those struggling with social anxiety, start small—perhaps by visiting a familiar café or park and gradually increasing social interactions at your own pace.
Loneliness Way #1: Pick Up the Phone
Call someone you haven’t talked to in a while. One day, I decided to reach out to a former colleague I hadn’t spoken to in years. I wasn’t sure how she’d respond, but her joy was obvious—and to my surprise, the call led to a valuable business connection! You never know what blessings might come from a simple phone call.
Way #2: Engage on Social Media Positively
Scroll through your favorite social media platform and leave positive comments on posts you enjoy. Skip the negative content and focus on building connections. Respond to anyone who comments on your posts. This simple action can brighten your day and help you realize just how many people care about what you have to say.
Way #3: Create a To-Do List
Make a list of projects or tasks you’ve been putting off, like organizing your closet or starting a creative hobby. Tackling these activities not only keeps your mind busy but also gives you a sense of accomplishment.
Consider joining a group or club that aligns with your interests—it’s a great way to meet new people and spark conversations.
Loneliness Way #4: Step Out of Your Comfort Zone
Challenge yourself to try something new, like going to a coffee shop, joining a workout class, or visiting a local park. Strike up conversations with people around you. Even simple questions like, “What’s your favorite thing about this place?” can lead to meaningful connections.
Way #5: Take Massive Action
The key to overcoming loneliness is action. Make the call, meet a friend for coffee, or simply chat with someone in line at the store. The more proactive you are, the less room loneliness will have to grow.
Retail therapy, volunteering, or even getting involved in a local charity can also lift your spirits and broaden your social circle.
Some Final Thoughts about Loneliness: Change Your Mindset
You may have noticed here that all of these involves “action” on your part. You can’t just let it come to you. Things will not change unless you move. Movement is action, which makes things happen. Your journey to overcoming loneliness starts with your mindset. Remember, you are worthy and valued as a child of God. When negative thoughts creep in, recognize them for what they are—just noise. Replace them with affirmations of God’s love and your purpose.

- “Don’t be afraid, because I’m with you; don’t be anxious, because I am your God. I keep on strengthening you; I’m truly helping you. I’m surely upholding you with my victorious right hand.” — Isaiah 41:10
