How Do I Know My Calling? A Christian Woman’s Guide
Because you’re not here by accident — and you can discover the purpose God has for you.
For years I kept hearing: “You need to figure out what your calling is.”
And honestly? My first response was, “Oh gosh, I must be stupid or worthless or something because I have no idea what my calling is.”
Then I’d beat myself up, then I’d ask: “Why? Why do I have to know this?”, which gave me an ‘out’ and promptly procrastinate the entire process.
I wasted so many years of my life making HUGE, terrible mistakes that hurt me and my confidence. From broken marriages, to stupid career decisions, and grief, I messed up my life almost irreparably; all because I had no idea of my calling nor a clue what I really wanted.
I didn’t have a roadmap, I couldn’t see how I was supposed to figure it out, and I kept telling myself: “Yeah right… I don’t have a calling. And I don’t need a calling.” That, I now recognize, was one of the biggest cop-outs I could have told myself.
Because here’s something that never occurred to me. Not once. “If I figured out what I wanted, what my calling was, and could see my vision, then I could have saved myself years of heartache, torment, and sadness.”

As I walked with God over the past several years, reading the Word and studying specifically the Gifts of the Spirit (yes – I used that study: The Gifts of the Spirit. This is a well-received Bible Study that I have taught.), I realized what was blocking me: I wasn’t anchored in who I am (beautifully and wonderfully made in God’s image), and I wasn’t connecting the dots between my gifts and my calling.
That slow revelation changed everything for me.
And here’s the thing: you’re probably in exactly the place I was. You feel restless, maybe stuck. You keep hearing that same whisper: “There must be more.” And you’re wondering — how do I know my calling? What does it look like? Can I really step into it with confidence?
Let’s dive in together.
1. Why figuring out your calling matters more than ever
If you’re in your late 20s (hello 28-year-old woman reading this), you’re part of a generation asking big questions: What am I here for? Am I making an impact? Does what I do on Monday matter on Friday?
Here are some statistics that show how widespread this search has become:
- 58 % of young adults say they’ve recently felt little or no meaning or purpose in their lives.
— Source: Harvard Graduate School of Education, Making Caring Common Project - 75 % of Millennials report that they are actively seeking meaning and purpose in life.
— Source: Cultural Research Center, Arizona Christian University - Bible sales are surging — up 22 % in the U.S. in 2024 and 87 % in the U.K. since 2019, largely driven by Gen Z rediscovering faith.

What does this tell us?
Two key things:
- You’re not alone in wondering about your calling or feeling “adrift.”
- Many are turning back to faith — not self-help — to find meaning and direction.
Your calling matters for your emotional, spiritual, and even mental well-being. It matters for how you show up in the world, and it matters for eternity.
2. What your “calling” really means
When we hear calling, we often think “career,” but that’s too small.
Your calling isn’t just your job — it’s the way God uniquely designed you to live and serve. It’s the intersection of who you are in Christ, the gifts He’s given you, and the needs He’s placed around you.
It’s not something you earn; it’s something you discover through relationship with Him.
3. The first key: discovering your spiritual gifts
For me, the turning point was when I realized I didn’t need to “figure out” my calling alone. God had already given me clues — my spiritual gifts.
Once I began studying them, things clicked into place:
- My gifts were tools, not trophies (truly not some huge wondrous trophy that no one else has because yours is unique)
- My strengths pointed to where I could serve joyfully.
- My passions revealed where God was already moving. (This was huge for me…He gave me these passions so that I would use them. Way cool!)
When you begin to reflect on your gifts in light of Scripture and community, you open the door to your calling.
4. A roadmap for stepping into your calling
Here’s a six-part framework that mirrors the way God calls us into purpose:
- Love – Root your calling in God’s love.
- Grace – Step away from striving and into His strength.
- Service – Live out your gifts through serving others.
- Community – Let others confirm and refine your calling.
- Transformation – Allow the Holy Spirit to shape your heart.
- Action – Put your faith into motion every single day.

Don’t Miss Out on What Could be a Life Filled with Peace
You are not an accident. God placed you here and now for a reason (Psalm 139:13-14).
Don’t be like I was. My heartache is mine to bear and I have..for many years. But with Jesus and knowing who I am, I have found my calling. You can too!
It’s time to stop doubting, stop procrastinating, and start believing that your life has divine purpose. You don’t have to figure it out alone — God’s already written the plan.
All you have to do is take that first step.
Some Scriptures to Discover your Calling
Proverbs 3:5–6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Ephesians 2:10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
