Laugh More, Live Better: How Joy Transforms Your Confidence and Success

If you’d rather listen to the article, you can listen here:

When was the last time you laughed? Like, really laughed? The kind of laugh that makes your stomach hurt, your eyes water, or even makes you snort unexpectedly?

If you’re struggling to remember, you’re not alone. Life gets busy. Stress piles up. Responsibilities take over. And before we know it, we go days—sometimes weeks—without a good, deep, soul-refreshing laugh.

But here’s the thing: we need laughter. It’s not just a fun extra—it’s essential to our well-being, our confidence, and even our success. And if you’re thinking, “Well, my life is too serious for laughter,” then friend, you might just need it more than anyone.

So let’s talk about it. Why is laughter so powerful? And how can we invite more of it into our daily lives?

Lana Turner Loved to Laugh

Hollywood legend Lana Turner once said:

Lana had her share of struggles—fame, personal heartbreak, and the pressures of being in the public eye. But through it all, she made laughter a non-negotiable part of her life. And maybe she was onto something.

What if we treated laughter the same way? What if, no matter what life threw at us, we made it a priority to laugh—at least three times a day?

If I don't laugh at least three times during the day I've had a bad day Lana Turner quote

God Designed Us to Laugh

Laughter isn’t just something we do—it’s something God built into us. The Bible actually talks about the power of joy and laughter quite a bit:

God didn’t create us to live in a constant state of stress and seriousness. He gave us laughter as a way to refresh our hearts, bond with others, and even heal.

Think about Sarah in Genesis 21:6:

She had waited so long for a promise to be fulfilled, and when it finally happened, she laughed—because sometimes joy is just too big to keep inside.

Even Jesus had moments of humor. He used playful exaggerations in His parables (like a camel going through the eye of a needle—Matthew 19:24). He delighted in children, who are naturally full of laughter and joy. He was fully God, yet fully human, and I can only imagine the warmth of His laugh.

The Science Behind Laughter

As it turns out, science confirms what Scripture already told us—laughter is good medicine.

Laughter isn’t just about fun—it literally reshapes how we think, feel, and connect with the world.

Laughter’s Ripple Effect

Have you ever been in a room where someone starts laughing uncontrollably—and before you know it, everyone is laughing, even if they don’t know why?

I actually NEED laughter. I find myself getting really down if I don’t have it. I have to intentionally make plans with someone I know will make me laugh in order to stay up.

I’ve noticed in my own life that laughter bubbles up naturally when I’m around people. It’s just part of who I am. And you know what? It makes everything better. Conversations flow easier. Worries seem smaller. There’s a sense of joy and peace that comes with it.

It’s really hard to frown and be sad when you’re laughing. Try it. I dare you.

God Wants You to Be Joyful

At the end of the day, laughter isn’t just about feeling good—it’s about embracing the joy God designed for us. He wants us to experience life abundantly, and part of that means letting go, lightening up, and laughing along the way.

So let’s make a commitment. Let’s be people who laugh. Let’s find joy in the everyday. Let’s live out the confidence that comes from knowing our hope is in Christ.

Because when we do, our lives won’t just be happier—they’ll be a light to those around us. And that, my friend, is a beautiful way to live.
